Hummingbirds and Humane award

Thanks to Anne of http://elmilagrostudio.blogspot.com/ I have been awarded this Humane Award.  I can think of no one more deserving to pass this on to than Bernie Berlin of http://aplacetobark.blogspot.com/ and her art blog http://bernieberlin.blogspot.com/  for her heroic work in saving dogs and cats and running that shelter in Tennessee.  I don't know if she has time for art work any more and I'm sure she won't have time to respond to this award but if you have time, check out her blog and maybe even consider a donation to a good cause.  I do feel honored by Anne to have passed this award on to me, maybe because of all the critters I help keep alive by feeding them.  Thanks again, Anne.

On a different note, I frequently find the hummingbirds stuck in the back porch window and I have to rescue them. Sometimes they are in a bit of a shock, or, I like to say "in tharn", a term from the book Watership Down. In that book Tharn describes the freezing of an animal in headlights, too scared to move. Well, as you can see in the second photo, it doesn't last long for a hummer.

Be well.

Oh Jan!!! You got to HOLD a hummer!!! My gosh, that is like holding a little miracle in your hand......what is it like?
I have read much about Bernie, and her work with animals. I do wonder if she has time for art, but what she does with animals is art in and of itself.
Amazing....I am blown away with the hummingbird picture.....

XXOO!!

Holding these little guys is a regular occurrence around here because they get into that porch room so frequently and need to be rescued. I try not to leave red items that will lure them in but it doesn't seem to matter. Other birds will get in there and will turn around and go back out the door but the hummers can't seem to figure it out. It is pretty amazing to hold one though. You can feel their tiny life force quivering in your hand, even when they are still.

You really deserve the award, and so does Bernie. I hope that she does still have the time to create that amazing art even if she doesn't blog about it.
How lucky you are to be able to hold such a beautiful bird, the colours are just stunning.

Hi Jan! I've held a few little hummers, too. Sometimes they get up in our garage (I have no idea why), and I have to track them down and get them out. They fly into our sunroom. And a few have crashed into our French doors and knocked themselves silly. Luckily, all have recovered and flown away. But how amazing to get to hold one and really look at it (for a few seconds!). My best 'catch' was a bat that got inside the house. That was very cool. :) xox Pam

how neat that you can actually hold them in your hand! i get excited when i see one flitting around (not at my house, though, because i don't have gardens and feeders), but at others' houses. they are really beautiful birds.

Lisa, It is one of life's small pleasures. A tiny jewel in my hand.

Pam, yeah, bat season is here too. I have to get them out of the house now and then but I will admit I don't grab them with my bare hands;-)

Maggi, yes, that Bernie is an amazing woman. I wish I could be so dedicated.

Marilyn, thanks for stopping by, I hope your day is wonderful too.

WHOAAA to the bird!

NOOOOOOOOOO Jan! It was not because of such comments which are none of those in my blog anyway. It was something personal that happened to me. At rest, do as you please, please!

Hi Jan.
Congratulations on another well deserved award!
This photograph of you holding the hummingbird is amazing. I get excited when I see one closely through the window for a matter of seconds ~ I could not imagine actually holding one in my hand.
Casey went back to SC and my brother is golfing with a friend today, so I am catching up on paperwork and blogging. I will also fit exercise in my schedule today
It's beautiful here ~ I hope you are having a beautiful day, too.

I loved this post! I plant flowers etc purposely to attract the hummingbirds and butterflies and we get plenty. At our cabin we seem to get more than we do here at the shore. I have had to secur a few from the rafters of our barn with a butterfly net and they do get stunned but fly off as soon as they are able. I was amazed the first time I held one, lighter than a marshmallow :)

Judi, Watership down was one of my favorite books too but I seem to have loaned out my copy and can't discover where it is. It was a nice hardbound first edition, read many times by various persons. I'd like it back! I could easily replace it but I want my original copy back!

Deborah, thanks for stopping by. Anne gives good comment, doesn't she.....

Audrey, Too bad you don't live close to me, I'd have you over and lure one inside so you could catch it.

I just finished my workout for the day. This is the start of our 3rd week! Yay for us!!

Yes, Diva, it is like holding a feather with a heart beat.

Saw your comment over on Diva's blog and thought I'd come say hello, neighbor. I like all your hummingbird photos... we often find them a little stunned as well, they are quite amazing. The Rufous have just recently returned after their winter break.

I am amazed that you get so many at one time to your feeder. Ours are so busy chasing each other off that we have to separate the feeders to opposite sides of the house. They are feisty little buggers.

I love all the awards you are getting, it is wonderful!!
You have tons of heart too!
Holding a hummingbird, now that is amazing! Tharn and all considered, still amazing.
My 1 year old is my grand daughter Madi. I am a SAHG (stay at home gramma) I never planned on having kids at 53. They say it keeps you young, but I was better off not knowing how old I was and what didn't work anymore.
LOL!!
Have a great day girl!!!
