One day I found this little visitor on the floor in my studio. I have no idea what he thought he was doing in here, searching for a pond? The door was wide open so I suppose he just wandered on in. Could be a she for all I know. These little creatures are newts. They live in ponds but are frequently seen crossing the road on wet days, searching for greener waters. After taking lots of pictures of this one I took him outside and released him near some water and he crept away.
I was inspired to create a little quilt and titled it "Nehalem Newt". Nehalem, because that is the name of the river I live on.
I gave this one to my cousin, Karen. She has it hanging in her dining room and seems to enjoy it still.
This final photo is taken in their natural environment, a pond. Benign creatures. I enjoy seeing them about.
Raining today and my door is open again, who knows what will wander in. I don't have screen doors, I have a sheer cloth hanging over the doorway so Charlie and Rocky can come in and out as they please, but it helps keep the flies out.
Listening to The Avett Brothers today. Nice music.
Be well.

Oh Jan I love this little quilt you gave to your cousin. The colors of the different fabrics are perfect as well as the leaves, they are beautiful!!!
I use to play with the little lizards when I lived in Florida when I was young.
Thanks for sharing this lovely little quilt.
Smiles,
Susan
Another woman who is not scared of lizards and toads!! I never see any of these guys around my house. Plenty of toads and frogs but no newts or salamanders. Guess they stay down by the river.

He is so cute. What a lovely little quilt you made, no wonder your cousin liked it so much.
I love your quilt, Jan! Such gorgeous colors. :) We have newts, too. I didn't grow up with them, and so to me they are very exotic animals! ;) They are down in the stream at the bottom of our property, along with a million frogs and toads. I like that you don't have a screen door. I would probably have a deer wander in - haha! Happy weekend! xo
The quilt is wonderful. I don't know that I have ever seen a newt. He is cute. Thanks for answering my questions on my blog. It was fun getting to know you better. I answered your ? on my blog, but my dream vacation would be a cruise, don't matter where I love being on the ship.
The little guy is sooooo cute! they just seem to be curious little things.....isn't it odd that a snake scares but basically you put legs on it and it's appealing?
Love the quilt---that was one fine piece. And the pic of the newt in the water!!!
You live in an amazing area.....
XXOO!!

Oh Jan, I love these pictures. I thought I was the only lizard lover at my age. My old email address was alizard@..... when I lived in Ohio. It was taken when I moved here to VA, so I had to change it.
Ever since you posted that jacket that you sewed the lizard to, I have been taking pictures of the lizard things I have around. I am planning to post that one day soon. You might be shocked!
I think I would love it where you live and I love your open door policy!!!!
((hugs))

love the quilt you created inspired by your surprise visitor!
OOOooooooOOOoo your quilt is lovely. However, the lizard, not so much. Desert lizards look much more benign! Very thin. I leave my glass doors open in the mornings too, and every week, without fail, I find one dried up, petrified little lizard that the cats invited in to play...rough play. What a beautiful intrepretation you made. **kisses** Deb
We found one on our porch not too long ago and we are far from water. What was he thinking?????
Oh I sure do still LOVE THAT QUILT! I will always keep it right where I live...as long as you don't want it back that is! ;-) As I do ALL the wonderful gifts you've made. I sure am one lucky(favorite!)cousin!
I Love You Jan!
Karen
lover of salamanders, newts, and everything else outside...except those darn moles of which I had one by the scruff of the neck yesterday and then let it go...it had a baby by the scruff of the neck too!
Eeew! I draw lizards on my trees because I am scared of them. Dang! They're cute but only when seen from far away.
