Goodbye, My Friend

Anne Huskey Lockard

A beautiful friend has lost her battle with cancer.   She leaves behind her husband Gary and many loving friends and family.  I met Anne online about 12 years ago and our friendship blossomed through emails and phone calls.  We never got a chance to meet in real life but that doesn't make it any easier to deal with having her gone.

 Gary, Anne and Dr. Salter

She fought long and hard against her disease and we all hoped she might be in the small percentage of survivors.  Unfortunately that wasn't the case.
I'd like to celebrate her life with this post.

Anne was many things, artist, poet, photographer, blogger, music lover, chef, gardener, nature lover, and she enjoyed a good glass of wine.  She loved to dress up in beautiful clothing and great shoes, her make up perfect.

But she wasn't afraid to get her hands dirty and tackle the roughest jobs either!

Anne and the Ramones quilt

She loved many genres of music but especially loved The Ramones and the Misfits and even created art in their honor.  Classic jazz was another favorite of hers.

She was well known to have an unquenchable desire for shoes and Doc Marten boots.  I wonder how many pair she owns?

This pair epitomizes many things Anne.

Occasionally she liked a softer style of footwear.

She loved her little parakeets and they brought much joy into her life.

Yes, Anne was a big fan of Halloween and Day of the Dead celebrations.  You could count on her and husband Gary to always dress up for the trick or treaters.

Photography was another passion. Flowers and nature were especially favorite subjects.  I invite you all to go to Anne's blog, El Milagro Studio and review some of her posts.  She could always be counted on to share inspiration there.
Anne surely is saying this from the place she is now.  She is mourned and missed by many but will live on in our hearts.

You said it!!!!

This is one of my favorite photos of Anne.  In red, doing something she most loved, making art.

I miss our daily emails, our phone conversations.  I miss you, dear Anne.  I will hold my memories of you close and keep you forever in my heart, sister/friend.

Beautiful tribute, Jan. I met her online just months before her diagnosis, yet I felt her passion for life immediately and through her battle. Her sense of humor constantly cracked me up. She shared so much with me in the two short years I knew her. I am forever grateful for the help she gave me as I wrote my book, and acknowledge her support in it. May she continue to shine on us here on Earth as she journeys to her next destination.

What a beautiful tribute to Anne. I really miss her too and I know how close you and Audrey and Anne were through this world. Her passing has really affected me too, I find myself thinking of her and hoping she is in an art filled heaven with every pair of skull adorned clothing and boots there are shining in a red velvet cape. I was thinking of her again tonight as I was writing my post and thinking of all the wonderful people I have me here in this virtual world - her being an extra special one.....F*** cancer, it really does suck. xox

I did not know Anne but after reading so many loving tributes about her I really wish that I had. She sounds like a marvelous one of a kind woman. Life is so unfair. So many wonderful people have been taken by cancer. I am so sincerely sorry for your loss. You have my deepest sympathies.

Dearest Jan, I am so sorry for your loss of such a good friend. I know you two were close ~ 12 years is a long time ~ enough time to get to know someone well and to like them and love them. Anne was a special lady and your tribute says it all. She was on my mind a lot today and tonight. I'm sure the service had to be difficult for all those who attended.
Anne will not be forgotten. She was loved by many.

I always admired Anne for her talents, her passion, her humor, her courage and her faith. And now, as with so many people of late, she is gone and I find myself wishing I had known her much better! I am so sorry for the loss of your dear friend Jan. You two were lucky to have found each other. And I am glad to have known her even a little.

A beautiful tribute, Jan & well deserved. I had no idea, when I was just admiring her wonderful f word t shirt, that she'd died so thanks for letting me know in such a loving & gentle way. There was even more reason to do that little bit of fundraising now. Thinking of you x

Thank you, Jan. I too was so affected by the news of her death. If anyone deserved to lived based on guts, humor and attitude, she is one of them. That t-shirt is hilarious--quintessential Anne! So hoist your grog to that wonderful lady up in the sky!

Hi Jan
This is such a heart warming and love filled tribute to your special friend. I loved Anne's art and marveled at the work she created. But you have shared so much more of who Anne was. Some friends are irreplaceable.

What a lovely tribute to a talented, creative woman. She certainly leaves a legacy with her artwork. I remember the embroidered stoles she made and showed on her blog.

Thank you for creating this wonderful tribute! Like so many, I never met Anne in person, but for the past three years, we phoned each other...I loved to hear her laugh....and comment to her Birdees to *quiet down* as we spoke! Our common bond was Nature and Music, God...and well...just life! We both liked makeup and shoes (though I confess to never having Doc Martins)... I loved her blog posts as she created fantastical works of art....and made fabulous religious garments for her Church. Father Steve and all in her Church will never forget her....those stolas were really incredible.

As her illness progressed, we spoke more often on FB..and tagged ourselves as *FBBBFF's*....Facebook Blonde Best Friends Forever...

I miss her so... such a vibrant, beautiful woman. I worry about Gary...(as she confessed to me she did too)...but I know his inner strength will help him ....and hope that we all keep in contact with him too. (Anne was SO PROUD when he received his Doctorate..)

I will think of her when I hear the Ramones and....all forms of Jazz. Early this year, we had a new Jazz Venue open in SF...I rushed down to buy her a SF Jazz Mug, filled it with chocolates and a schedule for 2013. I had hopes she and Gary might be able to come for a Jazzy Weekend...

You are one lucky lady to have known Anne for 12 years...

She is chuckling as she reads all these comments...she will be keeping an eye on us all... God needs a *fireball* like Anne in Heaven...

Thank you again for this tribute...

Love to you, to Gary and to all who post here. Anne...I miss you, but I know we will finally meet and I can give you a big, big hug!

Oh Jan...I am so saddened with this news. I kept checking her blog to see if maybe she had posted something...anything...and I was worried. So good you kept in contact with her. As Robin, I wished I had know her better. She had the most wonderful sense of humor and yes, I know she is smiling down on us and consoling us in her helpful way.

Thank you every one for your kind and thoughtful words. Obviously she was loved and admired by many! I've tried to reply by email to you all but some of you have no email attached to your comments so I just want to say thank you for thinking about Anne and keeping humor and strength in your hearts. She would love that. ♥♥♥
