Making a free style bed quilt

In between my outdoor activities of gardening and wood gathering and general getting ready for winter, I have been in the studio working on a double bed size quilt for Chainsaw Man's mom.  I'm not one for using a pattern so I picked a couple of fairly large print main fabrics in Donna's chosen colors, blue and yellow, and started in.  I decided to use the quilt as you go method and cut up 12 inch squares of my backing fabric and batting and started stitching and layering fabrics on top of those.  Above you see many of the finished squares waiting to be put together.

Above shows how they progress with sashing putting the blocks together.  One good thing about this method of construction is I was able to use bits and pieces of left over batting and reduced the contents of that particular drawer by quite a bit.  I didn't have to cut one inch off of my roll of batting.  Yay!

I found a nice fabric that had lots of variety in it so each piece I cut from it for the center of my blocks is different.  I like the mixed media feel it has to this print.

My other main center fabric is this yellow flower one.  I used a stitch and flip method of adding the fabrics around the center theme fabrics until I had my 12 inch square covered.

I had a basket full of strips of mostly flower print fabrics left over from a previous project so I stitched them all together to make this yardage and I then cut six inch panels from it for my borders.

This shows the quilt mostly finished except for the binding.  I like it!

Here is the back of it.  You can see  how I used two different fabrics for the back and I allowed them to fit in a random pattern.  I used only yellow for the joining strips on the back and only blue on the front.
Here it is with the binding and label on it, after spending nearly an hour with my lint roller, removing dog hair off of it.  I didn't used to have long haired dogs and I must say their hair sure does get around!  Pit Bulls don't shed a lot and when they do their hair just falls to the ground instead of floating around the room.  Now that I have a Golden Retriever and a Border Collie, I find a lot more dog hair to deal with.

This was a labor of love and served to get me restarted in the studio after my summer lay off.  I want to make more bed quilts this winter, I really enjoyed making this one and think it turned out well.  I need to decide if I want to save this to be a Christmas gift or just give it to her now so she can start using it.
As I was getting ready to turn out the lights last night, something at my dark window caught my eye.  It was a tiny little frog.  That Eeyore block at the left side of the screen is only two inches square.  A tiny night time visitor.

I hope to have more art to begin sharing again, although my commenters seem to like my nature posts just as well.  I appreciate you all visiting here and leaving comments no matter what I post.  Makes me feel like part of a wonderful global community of other artists, photographers, writers, teachers and readers.  Thank you!  I hope you all are enjoying a peaceful autumn or springtime season.
Be well.

Hi Jan, it is good to be back. This Summer just got away from me with going back and forth between the beach and the mountain. We will go Elk Hunting the end of the month and then I am home for the most part. The quilt is beautiful. I have never tried to make a quilt, but they fascinate me. I also really like the heading you have with all the gorgeous beaded hearts. Good Night and I will be back again soon. Tell Mary Hi for me.

I too love the mixed media aspect of this quilt. Kudos to you for using up your batting pieces! She will adore this quilt, who wouldn't. Such a talented lady you are. Dog hair, I never can figure how how so much accumulates in one day. It feels like they make it just to shed it. The broom is my bet friend. xox Corrine

I love your quilting. It is very fabric collage looking. Lots of love shows too. I'm sure it will be received as such.
Dog hair??? I kinda miss the dreaded St. Bernard hair rolls. Not. The two small ones we have do enough damage in that department.
I'm taking the week to make draperies and finish some sewing projects for GK's new room. I'll catch you on week's end. Oma Linda

Oh it's beautiful! Love how they resemble so many individual mixed media prints. And how funny that your post reminded me that when I was little my Mama made me a quilt and I loved it. For some reason though she later stitched it inside another quilt for my nephew and gave it to him. I really want a quilt now. See what you did? Heehee! Oh and I am thrilled to see you back into the studio although I think you're artistic eye is never far. Those previous post photos are fabulous. I LOVE your home!

Love the quilt! I have lots of those fabrics (the magnolia blossom, the bird/collage one.. must keep looking). And we have tree frogs visit in the evenings, too. Fun stuff.

Jan, the quilt is beautiful and all the love you put into it will keep Donna extra warm. It truly is lovely. Of course, the fact that there are birds and flowers on it helps me like it even more. You are SO talented. It makes me very happy to see you creating and not spending every minute outside working. How I would love to come sit with you outside and have a cup of tea this evening. SOOOOO far away. ):
Cute little froggie. I love seeing little creatures.

PS - I keep forgetting to tell you that I like that song "The Poet Game". It is sad and makes me cry, but I still like it.
